A MEDICAL seminar marking the launch of two anti depressant drugs known as poex and depcon was told that depression, anxiety and stress are currently affecting many people because of economic hardship, unemployment, poverty, donors’ reluctance to aid Kenya among other factors. The condition, the participants were told affects mostly those without jobs or those who have been retrenched. The two drugs were launched by Bulk Medicals - Pharmaceutical firm that deals mostly in branded generic drugs. For the past four years quite a number of people have been retrenched in Kenya thus causing the condition and the illness. This, according to medical experts, needs medical treatment.
The three principles modes of intervention in the medical management of depression are pharmacological, psychological and social. Social treatment in this context covers all interventions to try to improve a patient’s well being by altering some of their social life, for example by family therapy. However, and in practice, these elements are accepted as first line treatment for depression. The therapeutical aim of drugs, according to medical experts, restores the presumed abnormalities in the brain.
According to Dr. Nicholas Ochieng of Kenya National Hospital, the old drugs used for the treatment of depression had many side effects. Dr. Ochieng says that the mental health which has been at the periphery of medicine is beginning to get much needed or deserved attention including reviews and analysis of the drugs used in treating various related problems. Much is not known even by the general public about drugs like antibiotics and their mechanism of microbial resistance. The latest information on drugs which are useful in the management of mental health problems including depression is still minimal even among the doctors, nurses pharmacists, clinical officers and other health professionals, sys Dr. Ochieng.
However, there is good news for the patients suffering from the condition following the introduction into the Kenyan market poex and depcon. Widely used are members of new generation of anti depressant known as SSRI -Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Numerous studies worldwide backed by growing clinical experience, have demonstrated fully comparable efficacy of poex and depcon with very minimal side effects.
Significantly, in comparison with older and ineffective anti-depressant drugs, poex and depcon show fewer, less milder and less troublesome side effects. According to experts, poex and depcon improve tolerability and patient compliance. Bulk medicals are the importers and distributors of these two drugs. The drugs have undergone extensive evaluation in many patients and the results are always positive. With the efficacy of depcon and poex already established in depression and anxiety associate with depression, research interest has been focused on the many other psychiatric conditions in which benefits can be expected.
Doctors say depcon lifts depression and restores normalcy. It has longer during action and is free from side effects. The drug, says one specialist, is indicated in the treatment of depression, narcolepsy (uncontrolled desire for sleep) cataplexy (sudden recurrent loss of muscle power without unconsciousness - it is caused by strong emotion) and obsessive-compulsive order.
Poex is used in the treatment of panic disorder and anxiety associated with depression, anxiety related to cardiovascular symptoms, Agoraphobia (a fear of open spaces), anxiety related to general paralysis of insanity. Specialists say poex brings patients in “TAKE IT ESA Y” condition.
It has remarkable margin of safety and well suited for all ages including elderly patients.A MEDICAL seminar marking the launch of two anti depressant drugs known as poex and depcon was told that depression, anxiety and stress are currently affecting many people because of economic hardship, unemployment, poverty, donors’ reluctance to aid Kenya among other factors.
