GM maize is safe for consumption

The development of sustainable agricultural systems is fundamental to world food security and poverty alleviation.
This was the dominant message speaker after speaker brought to the just concluded World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Leading other world leaders in underlining the importance of agriculture, especially in the developing countries, Heinz Imhof, the chairman of Sygenta’s board of directors, underscored the need to double food supply to meet the needs of an increasing population, longer life expectancy and higher gross domestic product per capita.

European Union subsidies killing African agriculture

Despite 60 per cent of Africa exports being agricultural foods, there is a hue and cry among African countries that penetrating the American and European markets is a nightmare for them. In the process, this is pushing more people into abject poverty, whose magnitude now stands at 340 million Africans.
The issue that is said to contribute to the current situation is the one of subsidy policies pursued by developed countries. African countries warn that if the subsidy and technological approaches taken by developed countries are not revised, then their only productive sectors will collapse.
During the just concluded World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), agricultural subsidies, which developed countries give to their farmers, was a hotly debated subject. They said subsidies were denying them access to both world and local markets.
